Hi,

i recently tried to install windows xp pro on an about 4 years old pc.
For some strange reasons it
does not boot the xp setup cd (tried several different ones...). I
only see a black screen and nothing more happens.

The setup of windows 2000 worked without problems on the same pc.

Has anyone seen such behaviour and knows a solution?

Have you verified that all of your PC's hardware components are
capable of supporting WinXP? This information will be found at the PC's
manufacturer's web site, and on Microsoft's Windows Catalog:

Additionally you can run the upgrade advisor (on the XP Pro disk).

Does the PC meet the (bare) minimum hardware specs eg Pentium III, 128 megs
ram etc.

Installing XP can be touch and go. Best thing to do is pull out all
extranoues hardware eg modems, sound cards, usb devices etc, and install
with the bare minimum system - keyboard, video card if needed and mouse.

Have you set the BIOS so the boot device is your CD Drive as the 1st boot
device?

Do you mean to start an upgrade from win 2k?

That was the next thing i wanted to try. Will there be any problems
with reactivating the hardware after install?

I think so, at least i installed win 2k without changing the boot
order in bios.
