WIN XP PRO PRODUCT ID

I have reached a crossroads in my attempts to clean install a friend's
system...with 33% to go, I'm being asked for the CD Product ID and it's
nowhere to be found, i. e., the green parchment paper that came attached to
the jewel case housing the genuine Windows CD with holographs, etc. He has
all the stuff that came with his Christmas present from me December of 2002
except for the paper identifying the Product ID.

Is there any hope whatsoever for me proceeding? Of course I don't expect
Microsoft, or anyone, to believe me, but the story is true, not a version of
"the dog ate my report card!" It would seem to me that there has to be a
resource somewhere to help an individual with what I consider to be a very
human mistake, losing an important number.

THANKS! (fingers, toes crossed)

Call Microsoft.

If your buddy can give them
the approximate date of purchase,
the pretty close AMOUNT of purchase,
(if he says $5.95, he just sank his boat. If he says
$129.95... you get the idea.)

and the Store he bought it at,

I ran into EXACTLY this issue 5 years ago, and the Customer
Service rep said, "sounds like a MILLION similar requests we
get each year, and I'd be DELIGHTED to make your product
work for you!"

He'll put you on hold for a minute or two-- in my case, we
waited some 10 minutes for his time on the computer --
(timesharing), and then he generated me a brand-spanking new
key, and chrome-plated it.

You may have to catch the right guy the right day, but it is
done.

Good luck!

You will not be able to proceed without a Product Key.
If Windows XP is retail contact Microsoft:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=326246

If Windows XP is OEM contact the seller.
If the seller is unable to help, contact Microsoft per the above link,
Microsoft can help in limited cases.

If the system is running there are any number of programs that will
retrieve the key but it doesn't sound like it in your case, so if it's a
retail copy:

How to Replace Lost, Broken, or Missing Microsoft Software or Hardware

If it's OEM he'll need to contact the place from which it was obtained.

Look for a sticker on the computer itself, If it's not on either side
panel, try the back, top, underside, and even INSIDE the case.

Thank You!

The sys isn't running, having been zapped by the
\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM registry hosing, which BTW there sure seems
to be a rash of lately (I wonder if something else is involved?).

I remember the exact details of the purchase because it was a Christmas
present from me to him!

Wish me luck and thanks again.

THANK YOU!!!

The CD came with the custom system I purchased at PC Club in Southern
California. The CD sure looks like a retail CD, but I guess it isn't after
all : ( I'll try PC Club first, then go to the link you provided : )

THANKS! I bought it for him as a Christmas gift and remember well the
details of the purchase...I hope it helps!

Last time I saw this was after uninstall of an application that corrupted
the registry. Luckily System Restore was enabled so it was simple enough to
boot up to the repair console and copy the last backup registry over the
existing one, and the laptop booted up fine. :)

I realized while talking with a M$ tech that I had forgotten the sticker has
the Product ID on it! Voila! Of course, it was there! My bad...

THANKS!

Hi! THANKS for the reply...

Both my friend, from whose home I've just returned after a complete clean
install, and I had/have similar problems. He's now taken care of, excuse the
grammar, and now a few last glitches are in order for my system. I will
probably opt for a clean install as well, since my C drive was previously
backed up for whatever I may wish to keep -- I was also fortunate in that I
could get back to Windows, while my friend's registry was too hosed to do
same. The nice thing about working with the M$ tech on my friend's system is
that the tech used a system RP (02/23/06) from the old install after having
taken me through a clean install on a second HD (which was extra hardware I
had been keeping) I had originally asked be built into the tower case
hardware.

And though I don't have a second spare HD on my sys, I'm hoping that tech
can guide me through the same type of clean install which keeps my old
settings. Do you know if that will be possible?

THANKS again,

Goob

That's why they do stickers, they're a bit hard to lose, and very
difficult to remove without buggering them up.
