I have tried for the last few days to install Windows XP Pro. on a
computer with ECS 648 FX-A S478 mother board. I have 512 MB DDR
PC3200. I have installed the latest BIOS update 648fxa_10c1.bin from
the manufactor. I have also tried to install WIN ME no luck. The only
OS that I can install is WIN 2000 Pro. When I try to install WIN XP
Pro. (clean install or upgrade) it will get the files (the DOS part)
and when it should go to the part, where you setup your hard drive,
all I get is a black screen with the cursor blinking. There are no
Error messages. This is driving me nuts. The computer worked fine
until I changed the Mother board. PLS. HELP
Thanks John

Try upgrading the BIOS. If its the latest versions reset the BIOS defaults
if you havent already. Remove any unneccessry hardware from the machine as
well and see if you can install with minimal hardware.

Hi Joseph,
Thank you for the suggestions.
The BIOS is the latest from the Manufactor.
I tried to reset the BIOS to Fail Safe Default Option. I
removed all PCI Card except for the Video Card. But it
is the same result. Setup stops after the DOS part of the
setup has finished. Screen turns black and the cursor is
just blinking. It never gets to the Text part of the
setup. I have left it there for an hour to see if there
would be any error messages, But NO. I have checked and
not found any IDE Controller drivers that can be used
during the (DOS) setup (F6)(has to be on a floppy disk).
And I do not know if that would help either. But it does
not make any sence to me right now that I can install
Windows 2000 Pro. and it will not accept Windows XP Pro.

I have found the problem. It was the PCI Graphic card
that stopped the installation. After I installed an AGP
card the installation went with out any problems. Go
figure.
