You can try to boot in the safe mode:

by the bootscreen F8 and then the safe mode,
wenn you can enter the safe mode.

please update after you try this.

Hi, Chaz.

HOW are you formatting your HD? Surely you are not still booting the MS-DOS
floppy and using FDISK and Format.com? And you are not reinstalling Win98
just so that you can upgrade from there to WinXP? It's not clear to me from
your message that you are not doing these things.

Just set your computer BIOS to boot from the CD drive. Put your WinXP
CD-ROM in the drive and reboot. Follow the prompts on the screen. One of
the first ones offers to repartition and reformat your HD. Say Yes. Unless
you plan to install Win9x/ME on this computer some day, choose to format
NTFS. At one point during installation, if you are using an Upgrade CD, the
Setup program will ask for evidence that you have a qualifying product. At
this point, insert your Win98 CD into the drive just long enough for Setup
to verify that. Then Setup will continue to install WinXP.

There is NO need to pre-format the HD, and there is NO need to install Win98
before you install WinXP.

If I've misunderstood your dilemma, please post back. Tell us the make and
model of your computer and a few basic details, like how many hard drives
and how they are partitioned and formatted.
