Windows XP Professional SP1
Gateway DS 450XL laptop

Computer started up fine earlier. Wasn't even using it. Came back to start
working it it and noticed that everything to gone black. Can hear fan working
but nothing else is working. Won't read bootup CD, WinXP installation CD,
cannot access safemode, cannot access BIOS setup, cannot get prompt. Seems
only thing working is fan. Any ideas?

Definitely not an XP problem as its not even getting past the BIOS. Sounds
like something has failed in the hardware. Possibly the power supply. I
would call Dell.

You could try holding in the power button for 10 sec to turn it off. Is
it plugged into main power or running off the battery? The fan shouldn't
be running if it is in standby. When get it to turn off, try restarting
it, watch for drive activity. If no drive activity, contact Gateway.

I think contacting Gateway would be more productive, Dell would just laugh
at him.

I'm laughing at myself, too. Brain fart. I had just gone through a problem
with a Dell and I still had Dell on the brain.

Thnx for the reply. Was plugged in to main power. When I turn it on, LED
lights flash (for hard drive, Cd drive, etc) then stay off. Gateway said I
should mail it to them and for $300 they'll take a look at it. (I'm kinda
saving that as a last resort - or not)

The lights on-off doesn't sound good in my book. Sort of like there is a
power regulation issue.
