Ive just installed 2 ide maxtor 160 gig diamond 9 plus
hardrives on my win xp mobbo and im running service pack
1. In properties the drives are only showing 127 gig in
size. Ive checked the bios and that says both are 160 gig
so i downloaded the maxblast big drive software and
installed and its still showing 127 gig. I then installed
the latest atpi patch from microsoft and restarted and it
still showing 127 gig. This is driving me mad can anyone
help?........ I also checked the intel site for an update
controller but my chipset is the 875 and no updates are
available.

Did you check your motherboard website for a BIOS firmware update? Most
likely there is an update that will allow your motherboard to properly
handle large disk drives.

Hi ,

Thanks for your response. Im waiting for dell to get back
to me, there is a bios update but not sure if its
firmware, agai thanks for your help.

Yes i know about the 48 bit lba disk access and have it
installed but properties still showing 127 gig im sure
the bios update will do it

Did yr winxp inst. disk have 48 bit enabled? or did you update the SP?
If 48 bit wasnt enabled prior to format then 127gb is all you will get. You
have to enable 48 bit then partition/format remaining free space.
Of course there have been reports of possible data lose/corruption when a
large disk is formated/partitioned in this way.
You really need to have a slipstreamed winxp inst.disk, with 48 bit enabled.
I'm assuming the bios correctly identifies the disk.

yep the bios indentifies both the new disks as 160 gig,
one drive is empty at the moment so maybe i can re format
this drive with 48 bit enabled as no data can be
lost.......then i can copy across boot disk and set new
160 as master and then reformat original boot
disk.....would this work?
Im running win xp home and pc came from dell 1 yr ago,
the bios only tells me both drives are 160 gig not if 48
bit is enabled ........not sure how id check
this...............thanks for your help

Do you have XP SP1? SP1 will see the other gigs.

As yr bios recognises the disks, its not a bios prob.
What I meant was that if you installed the os on these disks, prior to
enabling 48 bit, they will only have formated to 127gb.
If you then enabled 48 bit, you should then be able to partition/format the
remaining free space.
Winxp SP1 has 48 bit enabled, If yr origonal XP disk is pre SP1 then once yr
sys is up and running you would be advised to create a slipstreamed XP disk
containing SP1, in case you have the the need to do a clean install.
You can check as to whether 48 bit is enabled by ref to;
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;q303013
If the second disk is free/empty you would be better advised to either ghost
or use hd manu utility to copy xp on the 2nd disk and then set this as boot
disk. Then clear the partition on the origonal 1st disk and
repartition/format.

Look at the drives using Disk Management. The only thing necessary for
Windows XP to see past 137GB is SP1.

As Andy wrote, you will need to use Disk Management since you did not
have LBA 48bit support when you installed Windows. You must have used a
Retail copy of Windows XP before Service Pack 1 was released. There
should be a way to add the extra harddrive space back as it will show up
as unallocated file space. To get to the Disk Mangement, Right Click on
My Computer, click Manage, and look toward the bottom of the list where
you will find Disk Management. Now right click on the unallocated space
and see what your options are. You may have to make it into a seperate
partition, but at least you get your space back.
