I have a ATI AIW 9800 Pro graphic card on a win xp pro
system. Last week I tried to the latest CATALYST drivers
for Windows XP Version 4.3. I used the ATI Uninstall
software (which also removes the control panel). I
emptied the recycle bin and rebooted into safe mode. Then
I used Driver Cleaner 2 to delete and remnants of ATI. I
again emptied the recycle bin, disconnected my Cable
modem, and rebooted. I allowed Win XP to load the
standard video drivers and then updated them with the
CATALYST drivers.

Here's the problem. After updating (I have not rebooted
yet), everything is fine. The new drivers are in place
along with the control panel. I can change resolutions
and play games. BUT, every time i reboot, Win reloads the
standard video drivers again. I have retried this until
I'm blue, and even tried older drivers and different
methods and the same things happens. I am logged on as
the administrator and DirectX 9.0a is loaded. Any
clues????

Thanks for any help.

Did you download the broadband single file or
the three file package? In the ATI instructions, I don't
see that you had to remove more than the display driver. I
think you will need to reinstall the whole 24 MB package.

Instructions

Print Instructions

Download Instructions:

boot up.
2.. Close all other applications
running, including any anti-virus software before attempting
to install the driver suite.

Windows 2000/XP:
You can confirm that all applications
are closed using the Windows Task Manager.
a.. Press CTRL+ALT+DEL once and then
click Task Manager. Select the "Applications" tab. If any
applications are still listed on this tab, highlight the
application and then click the "End Task" button at the
bottom of the tab. Repeat this procedure until there are no
more applications running.

I tried installing both the 24 MB complete package and
also tried the three individual files: Graphic drivers,
WDM, and the control panel. I even tried the Omega
Drivers and the DNA drivers. They all worked fine after
installing, but again returned to standard graphic drivers
upon reboot. I'm pulling my hair. I have followed all
directions plus directions of other forums. All work
untill reboot.

Hi

After reboot, go to device manager
If you see the VGA adapter as well as the ATI adapter(with red X or yellow?), uninstall the ATI adapter and then reboot

Hope this helps

Pete

After reboot, all I get in Device Manager is the Standard
VGA adapter. From here, I can do an update driver or
uninstall driver then reinstall the new drivers but on
reboot problem re-occurs. Thanks for trying. Anyone else
have any ideas.

This is one of many, many methods I've tried with no
luck. I have disconnected my cable, completely taken
every reference to ATI from my computer/registry, emptied
the rcycle bin, rebooted to safe mode, used Driver Cleaner
3, re-emptied the recycle bin, rebooted, reintalled the
CATALYST drivers or the Omega drivers or the DNA drivers
and the control panel. Everything works fine with new
drivers until I reboot. Then it goes back to the Standard
VGA drivers. A great pain in the ass.

Hi,

Have you tried to install the catalyst driver in safe mode?

I have successfully installed the catalyst drivers for my
frined's PC running XP Home using ATI8500 vedio card.
First, I removed all the old ATI stuffs, then change the
display resolution to VGA mode then reboot.
In device manager, I found two vedio adapter, one is VGA
adapter and the other is ATI adapter with a big red Cross
(X).
I uninstalled the ATI adapter, run msconfig to disable
background applications and antivirus softwares, and then
reboot to safe mode, login as administrator and then
install the downloaded catalyst drivers (all background
applications have been temporary disabled including
antiVirus software before the installation)

I had this problem with my ATI Radeon 9600 card.
Here's the solution http://www.ati.com/support/infobase/4217.html (portions
cited below)

Symptoms: Data corruption may occur if the Large System Cache feature is
enabled in Windows XP. This symptom does not occur on all systems. The key
ingredients that lead to this symptom may include:
- System Memory greater than 512 Meg. (1 gigabyte of RAM is common)
- Large NTFS disk volumes. And multiple large volumes. (60-100 gigabyte
hard drives possibly in RAID arrays)
- AGP graphics with large AGP resource requirements (AGP aperture greater
than default)
- Large file transfers

Synopsis of the problem: the computer runs out of system page table
entries. Windows determines (at boot time) the default number of page table
entries to assign, based on the amount of system memory available. The
items mentioned above all contribute to increasing the number of page table
entires that Windows XP must maintain and in extreme cases the page table
entries may be exhausted.

btw... when you load the drivers, a small screen pops up telling you about
this problem - and the URL to the solution. Like me, you were probably in
too much of a hurry to read the contents of the box on the first install ;)
I finally read it on the 4th try! Lesson: sometimes it's alright to read
the directions - first!
