Every once in a while when rebooting (esp. if I have any cd in the drive) the computer comes up with some corrupt thing, so I take the cd out and it starts fine.
Now, somehting is diff. I am gettng the error message the file windows\system32\config\system file is eihter corrupt or missing. I can clearly see it. Now, I keep getting the recovery console. If I just copy the file from the cd will this work?

No, copying this registry file will not work as it is not up-to-date and
there are several other connected files as well. You have a rather serious
problem, I am afraid to say, so unless you are quite an expert I would
advise you to get help. Do a google search on config\system+file+xp and
you will find many references to this including an MS Knowledge Base article
307545.
Good luck.
