I had Win XP Pro upgrade installed on my machine. I
purchased the full version, uninstalled the upgrade
version, thenreformatted and installed the full version
on my machine. I am planning on giving the upgrade
version and installing it on a friend's machine. Is this
possible to do because of activation.

Yes. You likely will need to activate by telephone
and explain what you have done.

You can certainly do as you suggest without a problem. Depending
on how long you had it installed, he'll be able to activate
either over the internet or by a quick easy voice call to an 800
number, explaining that it's been removed from the original
machine.

But why did you do this? Are you aware that there are absolutely
no differences between the Upgrade and Full versions, except for
what they accept as qualification to install? You can even do a
clean installation with an Upgrade version as long as you have a
CD of a previous qualifying version to insert when prompted to do
so.

The only thing you can do with a Full version that you can't do
with an Upgrade is a clean installation without a previous
qualifying version's CD.
