I am trying to move a lot of files from laptop some 30GB worth of files
to my desktop computer.

I decided that the fastest way to do it (especially since my laptop
only has USB 1.1) is by putting the laptop disk drive in a USB 2.0
enclosure and then copying over the files.

However, when I try to access the files on the laptop's drive I cannot
access them.

I have tried to do so by changing the permissions on the drive after I
put it back in my laptop, but it does not seem to work, or I don't
quite understand how the sharing would work etc....

Question is what do I have to do so that I can put the laptop drive in
the USB 2.0 ecnclosure and access it from my desktop? Or any
suggestions????

Thanks,

You need to disable Simple File Sharing on your desktop and
take ownership of the files. Take a look at these articles for
more info:

shared folder in Windows XP

Note: If you are running Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition, you
must start the computer in safe mode, and then log on with an
account that has Administrative rights to have access to the
Security tab. To start in Safe Mode, reboot your computer and
start tapping the F8 key as soon as you see anything displayed
on the screen. Keep hitting F8 until the Advanced Startup
Options menu appears. Use the up and down arrow keys on your
keyboard to select Safe Mode. Hit Enter.

Good luck

Thanks for your help - I used the info/URL you gave me on how to change
ownership of the folders I needed to access on the new system.
