for several weeks I have tried to correct this problem by uninstalling,
redownoading etc..

Nothing works.

At power up, I get an advisory that my Operating System (assume Win XP) and
the IE 6 and Tools on my equipment are not compaible.

Advises the correct IE 6 will be downloaded and installed.

This occurs until I get to the installation part - then I am advised that I
have a newer version of IE on my equipment - and installaltion cannot
continue.

I say ok.. then go on working.. but next time I power up.. same routine..

Something simple no doubt but it eludes me big time.

XP

Make sure your anti-virus is turned off.
The section
Windows XP and Windows XP SP1: Edit the registry and install Internet
Explorer 6
works on earlier versions of Windows.
