The MBR on my hard drive got infected and I had to format
and reinstall XP after cleaning the MBR. XP would not
install so I installed 98SE. No problems there, but when I
try to upgrade to XP, when XP tries to restart the first
time, I am left with a blank screen and the computer won't
respond. Same results for a clean install of XP. I tried
installing the drivers for XP, but without XP installed
Windows won't let you and they will not install under DOS.
I tried setting the VGA adapter to standard VGA adapter,
same results. It seems without the XP drivers installed XP
will not interface with the GeForce4. I really don't want
to go and waste money on a PCI grafics card that I will
only use to install XP, so if anyone has any other ideas,
please let me know. Oh, and nothing is connected except my
cd drive, the GeForce4, monitor, mouse and keyboard

Let's roll back to a baser problem..

Why wouldn't XP install from scratch?

It will install from scratch, then hangs at the same point, blank screen after the first restart. I only tried doing an upgrade to see if it would fix the problem.
