On Window 98 I would always create shortcuts on my Desktop
for my Floppy Drive, CD Rom Drive and CD Burner, (A,D and E
Drives)and used them extensively without any problems.
With Windows XP Pro, when I creat shortcuts for my A,D, and
E drives on the desktop, I get the following error message
when I try to use them. "The Item A:\ that this file
refers to has been changed or moved so this shortcut will
no longer work properly. Would You like to delete this
shortcut? "

All the other shortcuts work fine, it is only the ones for
the drives that will not work on Win XP.
Any ideas??????

thanks

Hi

Yes, I have an idea...

This error is introduced with the security update 821557 (MS03-027). If you
don't want to uninstall 821557, you can call Microsoft to obtain a fix:

Desktop Shortcut to the 3 1/2 Inch Disk Drive or to the CD-ROM Drive Does Not
Work

SYMPTOMS
On your Windows XP desktop, when you click the shortcut to your 3 1/2 inch disk

drive or to your CD-ROM drive, the shortcut does not work anymore.

CAUSE
This problem may occur if you have installed Windows XP update 821557:
MS03-027:

An Unchecked Buffer in the Windows Shell Could Permit Your System to Be
Compromised or Windows XP update 330836: Shortcuts to Mapped Drives on Windows
95 or Windows 98 May Not Work in Windows XP.

RESOLUTION
A supported fix is now available from Microsoft...

As the article states, you need to call Microsoft Product Support Services to
obtain it (outside the US, customers should contact their local Microsoft
subsidiary.). The support call will be be free as long as you refer to the
Knowledge Base Article number (Q824143) and ask for nothing more.

(or you can wait for SP2 that will contain this fix)
