The \ character is used to separate folders from each other and from
file names. So if you were able to create a file called abc\xyz in the
\lmn folder, it wouldn't be possible for Windows to tell whether
\lmn\abc\xyz was what you wanted or whether it was a file called xyz
in the folder \lmn\abc.
Similarly, the / character is used in many command to introcuce a
switch for the command and using it in a file name would confuse
Windows.
