Win Explorer (C: drive) not cascading

As the shortcut target path for my C: drive in Win Explorer, I have the
following path....C:\WINDOWS\explorer.exe /n,/e. When I click on the Win
Explorer icon, it takes me directly to my C:drive and collapses the dir
tree. Been doing this for years on Win 98 and XP machines. Today, when I
clicked on my Win Expl icon, Win Expl opened and defaulted to the C: drive
but did not cascade and there is NO (+ sign) to the left of the drive
letter. The drive's contents are listed in folders (or whatever view I
select) to the right but I don't understand why C : isn't cascading and
where the heck the + sign is to even open and manually cascade the drive.
When I right click on the C: drive, the option to *Expand* is not available.
It is available on my other drives. I did a system restore but that didn't
help.
Thanks,
Monica

In researching googlegroups for a fix for this problem, I've found a few
others it's happened to. And, I discovered I can double click on a folder
in the right pane, causing the + sign to appear at the C: drive so that I
can manually expand the dir tree. But, I've not come across any suggestions
that have fixed the problem or reasons as to what caused it. Sure hoping
someone can solve this fore me.
Thanks,
Monica

Hi Monica,

As the shortcut target path for my C: drive in Win Explorer, I have the
following path....C:\WINDOWS\explorer.exe /n,/e. When I click on the Win
Explorer icon, it takes me directly to my C:drive and collapses the dir
tree. Been doing this for years on Win 98 and XP machines.
[...]

Right click Windows Explorer/Properties and type this into the Target
path:

To have C: open (No folders)
%SystemRoot%\Explorer.exe /root, C:\

To have C: open expanded: %windir%\EXPLORER.EXE /e,c:

To have C: open and My Documents:
%windir%\EXPLORER.EXE /e,c:,%HOMEDRIVE%%HOMEPATH%\My Documents

For it to open to My Documents:
explorer /n,/e,%HOMEDRIVE%%HOMEPATH%\My Documents or
C:\WINDOWS\explorer.exe /n,/e,%HOMEDRIVE%%HOMEPATH%\My Documents

To have My Documents open only (No folders):
Explorer /root, c:\Documents and Settings\%username%\My Documents

If you wish to have Explorer open at My Documents on another drive,
you would use:
%SystemRoot%\explorer.exe /e, f:\My Documents

To have another Drive letter assigned to opening: D for example:
C:\Windows\Explorer.exe /e, d:\

d:\ can be modified for any folder/sub-folder you like. As in:
%SystemRoot%\Explorer.exe /e,d:\My Stuff

The /e switch tells Windows Explorer to open in the two pane explorer
mode and the c:\ tells it to open in folder C:\. If you omit the /e
switch, Windows Explorer opens in a single pane view.

Good luck, hope this helps.

Hi Monica,

Saw the picture, and I see the problem.

Try going to Start > Run > cmd and type chkdsk /r
It will say it cannot do it right now and will ask you if you want to
do it on the next reboot. Choose yes.

This checks the state of the harddisk and fixes all errors. It might
take a while, though.

Have you done a scan looking for virus and malware?
For malware:
Try downloading, installing and updating the free
spyware removers from the links below. Run both of them.
Ad-aware

Spybot S&D

Good luck, hope this helps.

OK, will shut down and run the chkdsk/r command.
I use Adaware, SpyBot S&D and Spyware Blaster. Ran them for problems and
all problems were fixed. Norton AV is up to date. I've alsi done a couple
System Restores to no avail.
I'll let you know. Thanks again :)

No go Roger :( The chkdsk/r didn't fix the C drive expanding issue. I
certainly thank you for your replies tho.
Monica

Well, I'm stumped.. Monica :-\

Have you checked your Windows Explorer > Folder options settings?
Try changing them, one at a time.

Good luck

Yes I have Roger. Maybe it will fix it's self, some day, just like it broke
it's self <g>
Thanks,
Monica

Yes Monica, I know what it feels like to have an unexplained annoying
event that came out of nowhere. Sometimes I used to get the C drive
with no plus sign, but it always corrected itself in a few seconds.

Probably some registry entry that got twisted somehow :-\

Good news! Windows decided to let me have back my automatic cascading C
drive :) Don't know why it stopped working and don't know why it decided to
start working again. I should be happy (and I am) but I sure would LIKE to
know WHY!
Monica

Hi Monica,

Congratulations on your recovering the cascading C: drive :-)

Did you do something special recently? Cleaned the registry, defrag or
something that could have caused the good change?

At any rate, I'm glad it's working for you:)

Roger, nothing (that I can think of) that I didn't try before in attempt to
get it to work.
Monica

Monica, I would suggest creating a back up of the registry and a
restore point to preserve the good functioning of your system.

Good luck
