Win 98(?)/ XP troubles

I recently had to buy a new hard drive for my laptop and after
installing XP I noticed some of the settings were odd. I discovered
there was some Windows files (possibly some components of 98) on the
computer along with my copy of XP when it brought me to the dual
booting option upon start up, and thanks to this group was able to
remedy that problem so that it boots straight to XP. However i think
that there are still settings from the previous Windows that are
affecting my settings in XP and would love some suggestions for
removing them as nothing seems to work.
Unfortunately the Windows "Unknown" and the XP files seem to be in the
same directory as both OS are on the same partition, so I'm not sure
which files to delete.
Also all of my toolbar and system tray icons have been replaced with
large pixelated versions so that identifying my programmes in quick
launch and system tray is difficult, I have attempted resizing them
with the appearance menu's advanced settings to no avail. Any
suggestions would be greatly appreciated

Installing two Windows OSs on the same partition is a strict no-no.
They are bound to interfere with each other.

It is not clear if your WinXP installation is a fresh installation or an
upgrade from Win98. If it is an upgrade then you should consider a
fresh installation. It would give you a far more robust and stable
system.

As far as I know it was a fresh installation as it did not give me any
options of an upgrade from any version - I was completely unaware of
the other system until it stopped to ask me which version to boot up
when I had restarted.

Do you intend to keep Win98? Are you sure it is installed
on the same drive as WinXP?

I don't intend to keep the other windows and I'm pretty sure they are
both installed on the same drive as i didn't partition the hard drive
when i was installing it and it was not partitioned when i began.
I would like to delete the other version as the two different versions
are playing merry hell with my settings and would like to be able to do
so without formatting and starting again but there doesn't seem to be
any other option!

I think you bought a used hard drive that had W98 on it, not a new,
blank hard drive. Who did you buy it from?

You need to do a clean install. Delete the partition and reformat it in
the XP setup process.

Thanks I'll definately be doing the clean install now that I know
what's wrong!
I sincerly hope it wasn't a used one as I paid the price of a new one!
I got it from Dymaxion, a Computer Research Facility who order in parts
and do repair work officially for Toshiba (in my part of the world at
least), so I think it's safe to say it was a new one, I'm just annoyed
that they told me it was blank and so I have to re-install everything
all over again!
