I have a machine that got a virus that messed up all the EXE files.
Though I was able to repair most of the system I still couldn't get
anything in the control panel to run. So I wasted my Windows\system and
Windows\system32 folders (I placed copies of them i the sysback folder
first!). Now when I try a clean install I'm told that I do not have any
files on my C drive that would allow the install to continue (verifying
that I have an upgradeable previous version since this is an upgrade
CD). I have a Win95 CD rom but I cannot get the CD rom to work in DOS
mode. How can I get around this problem so I can continue my install?

Does anyone know what file it looks for? Can I use a floppy. My notebook
does have a floppy drive that works in DOS.

Thanks much

It does not also ask you to provide proof by some other means? It
should give you the opportunity to remove the Windows XP CDROM and
insert the Windows 95 CDROM to prove your eligility.

The problem is that I cannot get the CD rom to work under DOS, without
the boot disk, which requires a floppy drive, which uses the same drive
bay as the CD drive.

The file must be in the Windows\System folder because I've never had
this problem on a re-install before.

Can you not boot from the CDROM disk itself and let the install
process start that way? Then when it asks you for proof of upgrade
eligibility you simply open the CDROM drive, remove the Windows XP
Upgrade CDROM, and insert your Windows 95 CDROM.

Good luck

Hi John. Insert a win 98se or win Me startup disk and re-boot computer. If
you have access to another computer, go to www.bootdisk.com for files if you
don't have them.
Choose "Start computer with CD-Rom support"
I suggest a clean install. Type D: (this is the ramdrive) type Format C:

TO INSTALL WIN 95:
Insert your Windows 95 CD. Type E: (or whatever your CD drive is) then type
Setup
IF UPGRADING: Insert Win CD ( 98,Me etc) Follow the above instructions.

If installing XP upgrade, you need Win 98 or higher installed.

INSTALL XP Full: Insert CD. eject floppy(if still in drive) restart
computer. Boot from CD and follow instructions.
