I have four new xp machines that can see each other fine.
I have four win 98 machines which can see each other fine.

The xp machines can ping and find the 98 machines if I
search by ip address. The 98 machines can not ping the xp
machines, but they can ping each other.

They were all able to see each other until I ran the
network setup wizard. They all have the same workgroup,
and 169.254.*.* addresses. ICF is off on the xp machine.
The guest account is enabled. Each machine has TCP/IP
with netbios enabled, and the netbeui protocol is
installed.

Any suggestions?

Using more than one network protocol is likely to cause problems,
especially when XP is involved.

Unless you have a specific need for NetBEUI, remove it from all
computers and use only TCP/IP. If you want to use NetBEUI, un-bind
sharing from TCP/IP, as shown here:

When I take IPX/SPX off 98 machines, the XP machines can
no longer ping or find the computers for printer sharing.
I will try again with above suggestions, but I think I
have been there with no results.

A common cause of TCP/IP problems is that XP's Internet Connection
Firewall (ICF) is enabled, which blocks pings as well as file sharing.
ICF is for use only on a direct modem (dial-up, DSL, cable) connection
to the Internet. You must disable it on a local area network
connection. Firewall programs like ZoneAlarm and Norton Internet
Security can also cause TCP/IP problems if they aren't configured just
right.

If you use IPX/SPX for file sharing, be sure to un-bind file sharing
from TCP/IP on all computers.
