I am trying to do a remote connection between an office
PC that runs Win 98 on DSL with a home PC that runs Win
XP Home on a dial-up. I have downloaded Remote Desktop
onto the Office Win 98 PC and this is where I get totally
confused as to what to do at this point. The office PC I
want to set as the host and the home PC as the client.
I'm not sure what I need to do to get the connection
between the two that is easy to understand and
configure. I have extremely limited knowledge on how to
do this and the I can't seem to locate how to get these
two systems to communciate.....any help would be greatly
appreciated!

You can *NOT* access/control a W98 box using Remote Desktop from a XP box. So...In your situation
look at VNC or NetMeeting RDS to access/control a remote W98 machine. Get the VNC server and client
from...

http://www.realvnc.com

NetMeeting is built-in to XP and 2000 and can *NOT* be upgraded. Get the latest version of
NetMeeting from W98 from...

http://www.microsoft.com/netmeeting

Look at this KB article for help with RDS...

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;233175

If this is over the public internet, then keep in mind the VNC data link is *NOT* encrypted like the
NetMeeting RDS link is, if that matters to you. Some folks run VNC through SSH or VPN tunnels.

Also...Danijel Tkalcec posted this awhile back. I have not used it, but it may be of interest.

Take a look at this set of tools:
www.deltasoft.hr/remote

Free, small, no-installation, easy-to-use, fast, secure, works over Internet and Local Networks.

Please let us, ie. the group, know how it works, if in fact you try it...

THANK YOU for that uselful info. Are there advantages in
using SSH Tunnels over VNC Tunnels or vise versa?
