Win 2K is really slow after Windows Update does automatic installs

I have a PC that all of a sudden came to a crawl after
windows update did its thing and automatically installed
some updates. I looked at the CPU usage in TaskManager
and it is continously at 100%. It now takes more than 5
minutes for explorer to load and a couple of minutes for
any program to load. The Control Panel does not even load
conpletely.

Has anyone experienced this and what can be done to fix it?

"I posted the following here a few days ago.
For those of you who are lucky enough to boot up your
system after installing KB835732 and your machine just
responses SLOOOOOWLY, try the following to remove it.

After installing Security fix KB835732, the SYSTEM.exe
procress uses up 99% of CPU time, and make the system non-
responsive.

To unistall it, I did the following
(1) Boot into Safe mode.
(2) Run TaskManager - and noticed that the SYSTEM process
was using 99% of the CPU time.
(3) From TaskManager set the Priority of the EXPLORER
process to REALTIME, so that I can get to the control
panel.
(4) Run ADD/REMOVE PROGRAM from control panel.
(5) Go back to TaskManager and set the Priority of
MSHTA.exe to REALTIME, so that the ADD/REMOVE PROGRAM can
get some CPU time.
(6) Select and Remove "Windows 2000 Hotfix - KB835732".
(7) Go back to TaskManager and set the Priority
of "SPUNIST.exe" to REALTIME, for the uninstall program
to
run.
(8) Wait a few minutes, and the uninstall program will
eventually ask you to click FINISH to reboot the machine.
It took a long time for the system to shutdown and I just
unplugged the power.
(9) The machine should become normal after reboot."

Thanks for the posting that info. I ran into that exact problem and
was planning on sending back the PC thinking it was a processor or
other on-baord fault (memory & HD was tested fine). Just as a last
attempt to get Windows 2000 running again, I typed some keywords into
Google groups and landed on this post. I followed your steps which
took about 10 minutes due to the poor PC performance and once the PC
finally rebooted, all was well again ;-)

Pity Microsoft do not put much testing into their patches. The last
time I seen that issue with the SYSTEM Process stuck at 99% CPU usage
on a PC, I changed the setting 'OS is plug & play' in the BIOS to 'No'
and that solved the issue. However, my workmate's PC which gave this
issue did not have that 'plug & play' setting in the BIOS setup.
