Dear NG:

WinXP Pro SP2, NTFS, Windows installed on C:\

I've successfully slipstreamed XP2 to a folder D:\XPSP2

I'd like to do a clean install of the slipstreamed XP2

Would I be able to run Setup from D:\XPSP2 from within Windows,
then during installation either:
A) Reformat C:\ or
B) Delete/Create the C:\ partition
I don't remember if your given these options during installation when you
run setup from within Windows.

Does anyone know if this is possible?
Will the Windows installation balk when C:\ is reformatted or deleted?

I don't own Nero, Roxio or the like to make a bootable CD.
I'd rather run install from the HD anyway.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Hi Kevin,

Thank you for posting here.

If you would like to format the C:\ partition, I would like to recommend
that you create a bootup disk. For example, you can create a Windows 98
Startup disk from a Windows 98 computer or from the following web site.

http://www.bootdisk.com/bootdisk.htm

After boot into DOS command mode, please run Winnt.exe from the Windows XP
installation folder.

Have a nice day!

I did exactly the same exercise but formatted and installed directly from
the 'slipstreamed' CD. You should be able to do exactly the same directly
from a HDD, assuming of course the WINXP installation package is on a
partition/HDDother than the one you intend to format (sorry, if I didn't put
that in someone else almost certainly would have jumped in :-)).

Thanks Ed T. and Bob Q.,

I'm doubtful that I'll be able to navigate to Winnt.exe because I'm using
NTFS.

I'll try it and post back.

Thanks again.

Dear NG:

As I suspected the Win98SE startup disk is unusable in an NTFS environment.

At the risk of repeating myself. Would I be able to run Setup from D:\XPSP2

Thanks again for any insights.

Hi Kevin,

If the D: partition is not NTFS file system, we still can run WINNT.exe
from Windows 98 Startup disk. If both the C: and D: are NTFS file system,
then you need to boot from Windows XP Setup CD or install in system.

If you would like to run Setup.exe in the current Windows XP, you can
choose to perform a new installation. But you cannot delete the C:\
partition since the Setup temporary files are stored in it. You can just
delete the original installation folder or choose another folder to install
the new Windows XP.

Thank you again for using our newsgoup!
