Out of the blue I cannot boot up at all(running XP Home). Message states:
checking file system on C. File system type is NTSF. Cannot open volume for
direct access. Then continues through boot process - sometimes will
recognize keyboard and other times will not - when it does not recognize
keyboard I have to unplug to restart. When log in screen comes up it will
not recognize my password so can not go any further to try any diagnostics.
I do not have any recovery disks. I have been able to load with a DOS disk
and get a prompt but it will not accept any commands. Any ideas?

If you have a retail version of xp cd,install cd,boot to xp
cd,recovery,select 1
for C: Press enter key for password,type:CHKDSK C: /R When its thru,type:
EXIT Let xp start,remove cd.Otherwise,press F6 at starting pc,select
safe-mode,
enter xp as administrator, chk event viewer for OS details.

What service pack is on the system? Download a drive diagnostic utility
from the hard drive manufacturer's web site. It will create a bootable
floppy or CD. Boot from it and and run the diagnostics.

Is Spyware Doctor installed?
