Will not boot after Auto Update Install

I had a message on my computer this morning indicating that Windows XP had
received an auto update. "Do you want to restart now or restart later". I
sellected restart now. Now my computer will not boot. When I try to reboot it
gets to a point wheir I am prompted to select F1 to continue or DEL to enter
setups. I have always had to do this with no problem, I select F1 and it
would continue to boot. However now when I select F1 it will continue to the
Windows XP screen then suddenly shuts off and immediately restarts the boot
process. I have tried to reboot in safe mode and experiance the same
problems. I have also tried to reboot by selecting the last known good
configuration.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Michael,

Try "safe mode with command prompt" and then logon as administrator. From
the prompt run C:\Windows\System32\restore\rstrui.exe to load the System
Restore GUI and return to a day prior to the update installation.

Thank you for the suggestion. I had tried to boot in Safe Mode with Prompt
and got the same result. It still reboots and cycles through the process
again.

Hi Michael,

If you have already installed SP2, one of the boot options will be to
disable automatic restart on system failure. Use this as it should produce a
blue screen error that may tell us what is wrong.

By the way, that Del or F1 prompt at the system POST means the CMOS battery
is dead and you should replace it.

Thanks again for your assistance. After a few frustrating days I'm afraid I
still have not gotten it to boot. I do have some more information to offer.
When booting in safe mode I have noticed that it always hangs at agp440.sys.
I did a search on the net and found that several others have experianced the
same problem that I am having related to agp440.sys. I have tried all the
suggestions I have found which have worked for others. However I am still
unable to boot. I have removed and reseated all cards, disconnected and
reconnected various drives and nothing has helped. I'm afraid I do not have a
restore disk nor the original XP disk, the computer was a assembled by a
friend and given to me as a gift.
Any suggestions?

Your options are to:
1. Ask the friend for the XP cd.
2. Buy one of your own that matches the version you have (OEM or retail)
or borrow one (again, it must match your version) from a friend.
3. Take the machine to a professional computer repair shop (not your
local version of BigStoreUSA).

There really isn't anything else you can do without the operating system
disk.

Thanks for the reply. Is it possible to determine the version with it not
booting? I will pursue finding an OEM version.
Thanks

I should clarify my comment concerning "What Varsion?". I realize that I am
running XP Pro. I was just concerned about the updates of XP Pro. Can I just
purchase an OEM copy of XP Pro to use for the restoration?

Thanks

If you have an OEM version of XP Pro that is not from a particular OEM
like Dell, eMachines, etc. - IOW a generic OEM version - then a generic
version OEM disk should do it for you. Any XP cd you buy now will have
SP2 included, so that will work for you.

I have ordered an OEM version of XP Pro. w/ SP2. I should have it tomorrow. I
am concerned about loosing data and files when I do a restore from the disk.
What procedures should I follow in order to restore XP and avoid any loss or
damage to my files?
Thanks for your comments and help.

I'd get the data off with Knoppix or a Bart's PE. Here is information
about using Knoppix:

An easy way to retrieve Windows files is to boot with Knoppix, a Linux
distro on a live cd. You will need a computer with two cd drives, one
of which is a cd/dvd-rw OR a usb thumb drive with enough capacity to
hold your data. To get Knoppix, you need a computer with a fast
Internet connection and third-party burning software. Download the
Knoppix .iso from www.knoppix.net and create your bootable cd. Then
boot with it and it will be able to see the Windows files. If you are
using the usb thumb drive, right-click on its icon (on the Desktop) to
get its properties and uncheck the box that says "Read Only". Then
click on it to open it. Note that the default mouse action in the
window manager used by Knoppix (KDE) is a single click to open instead
of the traditional MS Windows' double-click. Otherwise, use the K3b
burning program to burn the files to cd/dvd-r's.

I received the Windows XP Pro software today. I tried to do a restore. I
disabled the AGP440.sys. and rebooted in safe mode. This time it hung at
mpu.sys. I have removed the USB 2 card and all USB devices after reading
other post related to this problem. Still will not boot.
Any suggestions.

In my last last posting a stated that it is now hanging at mpu.sys. I should
have typed mup.sys

You've spent a long time on this and I believe you've exhausted the
usefulness of posting in a newsgroup. Take the machine to a
professional computer repair shop and have them retrieve your data and
diagnose your machine. It needs hands-on examination by an expert.
