I have a Vaio fx101. The hard drive is making "kerrunch clank" noises and
the pc cant find its operating system. So its new hard drive time. It did
have embedded ME but if I got to pay for an OS I might as well put XPpro on.

Will it overload the poor old thing or will it cope ok.

That will be fine, min recommended proc speed 300mhz , ram 64mb.

Flamer.

The minimum requirement for skydiving is; a paper towel with 4 strings
tied to the corners.

Your biggest problem will not be so much how well it runs, as you can turn
off the XP eye candy.. check with Sony that XP drivers are available for it

Ah yes good point. Thank you for mentioning it.

Nonsense! That may be the offical minimum, but that's simply what's required
to be to run it at all. Nobody who uses his computer for more than playing
solitaire would be happy with the performance of such a system

Actually with 512 mb of RAM it should perform reasonably well. Not a
screamer but quite acceptable.

My experience with XP has been that RAM quantity has a bigger impact
on overall performance than CPU speed, especially up to 512 mb of RAM.
Good luck
