Will a powerpoint slide show created in Powerpoint 2002 play on a computer
that has powerpoint 97? Do you have to save it as a Powerpoint 97
Presentation? or can you just save it normally?
Thanks

Just save it normally, however be aware the newer animations available in
2002 are not available in 97 and they will not play.

Yes, just like Austin said. The only thing that won't work are transitions etc
that are unique to 2002. Before you start your creating your presentation, click
on Tools, Options, Edit, and checkmark at the bottom all the items under the
heading "Disable new features. Your presentation should then work just fine
under 97.

Turning off the new features under Tools/Options/Edit actually takes you
back to what is essentially "PPT 2000 mode." So yes, the presentation should
work fine under 97 as long as you don't use things specific to 2000 that
aren't supported in 97. That would include, oh, animated GIFs and picture
bullets and the like.

I think animated GIF is probably the big one, but here are the others I
could find.

PowerPoint 2000 Feature..........PowerPoint 97 Result
Animated GIF pictures..........Appear as static images without animation
Automatically numbered lists..........Appear as bulleted lists, not numbered
lists
Graphic or picture bullets..........Appear as regular font-based bullets
Tables..........Appear as a single grouping of shapes
Voice narration..........Bullet point animations are not synchronized to the
voice narration; there is a long gap in the audio between slides

Oh, duh. This is easier:
