Hi ,

Im trying to undertsand a little about wifi networks, I'm going to get a
wireless g router - which is running on the 802.11g standard , I will
conenct my home PC onto the network via an 802.11g card and also have my
IPAQ on it, the problem lies in the IPAQ being 802.11b.

The question is when devices running a 802.11b connect to the network , does
the whole network have to run at this lower speed ?

Thanks In advance

Jon

I have a Buffalo WBR-G64 that is currently configured for a mixed mode, ie. it can have both 802.11g
and b clients, versus configuring for either all g or all b clients. The built-in help implies that
both type clients can access the device at their individual speeds, ie. g clients at the higher rate
than the b clients at the same time when the mixed mode is configured. I use an iPAQ 5555 device,
and unfortunately do not have a laptop or other 802.11g equipped device to test that out...

By the sounds of what you have written , a router that can take on both
standards without having to drop to the lowest speed would be perfect, the
reason why I think that they may have to drop down to a lower 802.11b speed,
is I have read that some wireless routers that have a "TURBO" switch , which
prevents "B" accessing the network.
