I am running into an unusual shut down problem with XP Home.
Everything was working fine and I was running some utilities to clear
spyware/adware and junk like that. Everything seemed to work fine
after that and sometime just after (I had rebooted a couple different
times) the Shutdown/Reboot did nothing (but still works in safe mode).
It was just like hitting a commandless button, the computer runs
forever and nothing begins to shutdown. The sound files are not
corrupt and all drivers are installed and working properly. I updated
the system with SP2 to get the client upto date and hopefully correct
the problem, but no luck. Any input is appreciated.

Thank you

I experienced a very similar problem recently, on my new system that is only
6 weeks old. After running spyware earlier in the day, I tried to reboot with
no success. Nothing happened at all, so I turned off the computer manually.
Big mistake I guess - it would not reload Windows when I turned the system
back on, even in safe mode and last known good configuration. My computer is
now at CompUSA and they believe the hard drive is shot. If anyone has any
clue what happened, I would appreciate any insight. Previously everything
was running fine, no problems with SP2 or any drivers.
Thanks,
Mandy

Got the same problem, the other day windows worked, yesterday it rebooted
for some unkonwn reason and it won't start anymore, it keeps rebooting when
loading windows.

But I don't think my hard disc is broken or something.

This sounds similar to my problem, and its driving me up the wall.

I bought a Seagate 200GB drive that I’m using to back up both my Apple and
my PC (XP).

Well, the drive is formatted to Mac OS Extended, and I have a program called
MacOpener so my XP can read the drive. No problems there. But, my computer
reboots after about 20 minutes of copying files over. This happened before I
formatted it to Mac OS, when it was FAT32, and also now.

When I was contacting the Seagate people, they suggested that the problem
was in my USB card. I had a 1.1, and just bought and installed a 2.0. The
problem still occurs.

Is this something that any of you have heard about? Is it something really
obvious? I’ve only got about a 700 MHz processor. Do you think that might be
it?
