I have a number of users who all started having the same
problems. The users lose the ability to paste in any
program, MS office programs have errors when starting
("Cannot use object linking and embedding"). Also when you
open add/remove programs, you just get a window with plain
text at the top with no icons, options or tables.

It seems to act like a virus, but I can't find any other
indication of a virus, and with the latest defs, I can't
find any infection using symantec, sophos or Norman.

any help would be most appreciated.

I am trying the recommended solution, but this problem is
occuring with machines logged on as administrator, and
when trying to paste in non-MS softwares (e.g. nero).

We are currently using Office XP, Win2K various SP's. It
seems to have affected 6 users simultaniously, with no
obvious trigger. We made no changes to the network,
domain, or local machines.

I am at a loss.

The solutions detailed did not work, any other ideas? This
seems to be spreading as I have just had two other users
report the same fault.

Thanks for the response. I am sorry to say i have
restarted the whole machine a number of times to no avail.
One thing I have found that the problem takes about twenty
minutes to take effect from startup, and once it is
happening, when you open control panel, the window has two
panes, with the control panel icons in the left pane and
nothing in the right one. We are also having
the "add/remove Programs" window problem.

Hmm ... do the same things happen in safe mode? Try running your virus
scanner in safe mode? The symptoms might point at some kind of trojan/virus
or mal-ware.

Run a free online virus scanner. Download Stinger and run that
also. Download the Blaster removal tool from Symantec and run
that. Repost your message in microsoft.public.security.virus
Check firewall settings to see if any programs have been given
access to act as a server. Are any of the users using an instant
messaging program??
