Right now I have a wireless g cable modem/router. A desktop with a wireless
g dongle and two laptops with wireless b mini PCI cards. It is a simple job
on the Samsung laptop to upgrade to a wireless g mini PCI card but the other
laptop is an IBM x31 and having looked at an exploded diagram I don't fancy
the job much.

My main interest is in transfering large files from the Samsung to the
desktop. Somewhere along the line I picked up the idea that a wireless
network is only as fast as its slowest component. Is this correct? Am I
right in thinking that if I leave the IBM with a wireless b card that this
will slow down file transfers between the Samsung with and the desktop (both
with wireless g cards) as long as the IBM is connected wirelessly to the
network?

Thanks in advance
Paul

Logically, how could it be otherwise?

Since the IBM is a laptop.........when you shut it off it therefore would be
out of the loop and not interfere with the transfer.
Besides the IBM would have nothing to do with the transfer between The
Samsung and the Laptop. You might need to adjust your Router for G speeds
only which automatically would take the IBM out of the loop and then set
back after.
I know on my router I can adjust the speed settings to B
only/B+G/Gonly.............the fastes would be G only.

Not correct on my system ... its a compromise
G still runs Gspeed but pauses more frequently.
It's Bspped asking B got anything, then back to G speed.
So it's not smooth charted G like G only, but still G-speed
between momentary pauses.
Three diff makes of cards, on two diff AP's here.
