Why would I use the List Style instead of incorporating the numbe.

I work with the legal community and often need to stucture outline numbering
for them. I have set up the outline using paragraph styles in older versions
of Word. But now in 2003 I am wondeirng if the list styles would be worth
investigating.

Anyone use them? In what ways and why?

For now I would stick with the tried-and-true. The list styles are
essentially undocumented, and none of the numbering gurus have experimented
with them enough to be able to help you if you run into trouble.

Hi Wendy,

Some people prefer to apply numbering independently of the paragraph style, and that's what list styles seem to be for.
Usually, I find numbered paragraph styles more "natural", but if you already have lots of paragraph styles and want to use one consistent way of numbering for a couple of them, maybe list styles can be useful.

A problem with auto-numbering, especially in the legal community, has always been that it usually breaks if you apply restarts and then copy into another document. Unfortunately, list styles have the very same problem.
I find that pretty disappointing, considering that list styles were introduced several Word versions after the original bugs were known.

Regards,
Klaus
