Why won't Word allow me to add or delete custom fields under file/properties

OS: Microsoft Windows XP Professional SP 2
MS Word: Microsoft Office Word 2003 SP1

I can NOT add or delete any custom fields at the file/properties/custom
screen for any of my MS Word documents.

How can I re-enable this feature?

I don't believe you can delete Word's built-in "custom" properties, but you
should be able to add new ones and change the default values of existing
ones. You have to type a value for the Add button to be enabled.

That list is an entirely pointless list of 'suggested' custom fields. They
are not actually in the document (or the template or anywhere else). Their
only purpose is to save you the trouble of typing the field name in the name
box -- but you can type any name you like.

Thank you for your response but I can not add new ones or change the
default values of existing ones. Whether I select one of the built-in
custom field names or type in a new custom field name, the ADD and
DELETE buttons remain shaded. See image at link below:

Also, I think I can delete built-in "custom" fields. I only think this
because it was recommended by Microsoft Help document to fix a problem.

As Suzanne said, "You have to type a value for the Add button to be
enabled." To make this as clear as possible:

You *must* type something in the box labeled "Value:".
Then and only then will the Add button be enabled.
