I try a date and get the message that the system cannot be restored for
this date - or, as it turns out, ANY date, except the Test point I created
last night and 5 mins later the system restore facility behaved perfectly -
for this one point.(I had tried system restore to see if it helped get rid of two suddenly
occurring annoyances, namely that on opening an edited image in its folder,
the thumbnail persists in showing the UNEDITED image; and in some image
folders the thumb titles do not show. But all is correct in Irfanview, which
gets its data from the same source?)

Don't know if this will help you but it might if you use Norton Products.

I had a similar problem after installing Norton System Works. I turned off SR rebooted and turned it
back on again and I also changed my settings in the Norton Antivirus section of Norton Internet
Security in the Options/Antivirus/Miscellaneous/How to protect my Product/I unchecked the box.
This option is also there in the NSW but don't remember the name.
This will reset you System Restore and have to wait for new restore points to be created.

This site has other ideas besides the one I told you about:
http://bertk.mvps.org/html/srfail.html

Hope this will at least help you.

Have a good day,

RScotti
remove "nospam" in order to email me.

Thanks for tips, RScotti. I've tried both: Your own procedure didn't have any
effect on the problem, so I went to the link and tried their Norton 2006
procedure. But on checking the box they suggested I got a dialogue box
asking for a password, which has confused me a bit. While I'm trying to
work that one out I'll see if there's anything else on the page you
recommended, and also try the method suggested in the previous reply to my
question. Thanks so far, for your trouble!

Are you running with Administrator privileges? If not I don't know how to fix this.
I don't use a password but am logged on as Administrator.I think Norton also has a option to create
a password but don't use that either.
I hate passwords!

You can only restore at given points, not the dates of your choosing,
the date's you can select are boldly highlighted, assuming restore is
enabled.

First, thanks for your reply. I'm not sure if it's right, because there seems
(in XP3 anyway) also an option to "create" a restore point. But in fact I've
stuck to the boldly highlighted dates. In the end I did what another helpful
reader suggested, namely, I got rid of all my points (by disabling PR,
rebooting, then enabling it again, and rebooting again) and have settled for
not having anything to restore to, earlier than this morning! Drastic. But at
least SR seems to be working, now! Thanks, again, for posting.

1. For the restore issue see this link on system restore:

2. For the thumbnail not updating try deleting the thumbs.db file in
that folder. It is the cache of images for the thumbnails. It will be
recreated. It is a hidden file so make sure in Control Panel | Folder
Options | View, Show hidden files and folders is selected.

3. To toggle between displaying the file name below the thumbnail and
not,

While in thumbnail view, hold the shift key down and select View |
Details
Hold the shift key down again and select View | Thumbnails

Repeat to toggle back and forth.
