Why won't single spacing work?

Hi nick-

The default line spacing for just about any text based app in Windows is
Single. Can you be a little more specific about your concern, including which
version of Word & Windows?

In Format>Paragraph, make sure that no Space After or Space
Before is specified (on the Indents and Spacing tab). If you are
using paragraph styles, also check the style definition. If this
doesn't fix the problem, choose Page Setup on the File menu, and
click the Layout tab. Make sure that "Vertical alignment" is set
to "Top".

If everything else fails, you can specify a fixed amount for line
spacing. On the Format menu, click Paragraph. Click the Indents
and Spacing tab. Under Line Spacing, choose "Exactly", and then
specify the desired amount (some trial and error might be needed
to find the appropriate value).
