When I am connected to my dial-up account at home, Outlook keeps the messages
I send in "Outbox" and won't send them. When I am connected by LAN, the
messages get sent. I have changed the settings in the "Tools", "Options",
"Mail setup" to Send immediately when connected.

You provided no necessary information. You must provide your Outlook
version, mail account type, the connection type you set for that account and
automatic polling intervals.

Here is the Info I think will help.

The version is Outlook 2003.

I have to email account types that have the problem.

One is POP/SMTP and the other is HTTP (hotmail).

The conncetion setting for both are "Connect using my local area
network(LAN)" w/ the "Connect via modem when outlook is offline" setting also
checked.

In the "Outgoing Server" setting area, nothing is selected.

Under the "Advanced" tab, the incoming server (POP3) port is 110 and the
outgoing (SMTP) is 25.

I hope this helps!!

Automatic Send/Receive settings?
What is the connection you have designated for when Outlook is offline?

Send Receive Settings are set to include all groups in send/receive and
"Schedule an automatic send/receive every 3 minutes"

When Outlook is offline, "Include this group in send/receive (F9)" and
"schedule an automatic send/receive every 3 minutes."

Well no wonder.
3 minutes is an unrealistic polling interval. You will often be sending a
message while one of your automatic polls is in progress.
10 minutes is the recommended minimum.

I am still having the same problem. Any more suggestions?

Do you have anti-virus software that's scanning your incoming and outgoing
mail? If so, try turning off that scan. For Norton, at least, you may
need to uninstall and then reinstall without those options.

Who said anything about antivirus?
I told you to set a realistic polling interval.

If you read the previous postings, the polling intervals didn't help. Some
else suggested the anti-virus software problem. Anymore suggestions.?

Probably OE, then - I suggested anti-virus scans, as they often cause
problems with outgoing mail.

Braden, you say you can send when connected by LAN - is that at work, and
you're using dial-up at home? Is this on a laptop, so it's the same
machine in both places? Are the messages that don't leave the outbox
italicized or not? What anti-virus software do you have?

I am using the same machine (a laptop) at both home and work.

At work, I am connected on a LAN and then messages do get sent.

At home, I use dialup. Outlook tries to send them, but encounters errors
after trying.

And yes, I believe the messages are italicized.

I currently have EZ-Antivirus, but I was using Norton before and was
encountering the same problem.

Ah, errors. You should have mentioned that earlier. What errors do you
get?

Here is the error I always get:

Task 'my email address - Sending' reported error (0x80042109) : 'Outlook is
unable to connect to your outgoing (SMTP) e-mail server. IF you continue to
receive this message, contact your server administrator or Internet service
provider (ISP).

It mentions the SMTP account, but my Hotmail account also has the same
problem sending.

Can you receive on your Hotmail account when you're at home? If you can
receive, you should be able to send on it - sending and receiving in
Hotmail use the same network connection.

As to the SMTP server, is that server at your company, or is it your ISP's
server? Something is blocking Outlook's attempts to connect to it, so
knowing where the server is is important.
