Why or how do files(e.g. drivers) get corrupted?

Hello all,

Recently I had a problem with my CD/DVD device. Device manager in XP
indicated that the driver for the device was either corrupt or missing. To
correct the situation, I had to remove the upper and lower filters from the
registry and reboot. It works fine now.

Here is my question:

1) Why or how do files (as in my case, the driver for the CD/DVD device) get
corrupted?

2) How can I detect what happened? Does XP provide a log of the events
leading right up to the situation? If so, where to find it?

Your help is greatly appreciated.

It seems like you are talking about to seperate issues.
Driver corruption. Something wrote in or erased the driver. Loading a backup
copy cures the problem.
Driver related corruption that really means that registery entries got
whacked. The upper and lower filter limit is an example of what is commonly
an applications program related issue.

Upper and Lower filter problems are most often caused by uninstalling CD or
DVD burning software. The installer makes the upper and lower filter
entries into the registry, and when the software is uninstalled in the wrong
manner, the entries remain.

Thank you for your prompt responses. The second part of my question was, if
there is something in XP (something like a log, etc...) which I could use to
trace and see what happened right up to the point of software corruption.
Once again, any help is appreciated.

Driver (or anything else) corruption usually occurs for one of the following
reasons:

1. Malovelent foreign diety
2. Bit rot
3. Neutrinos from a solar flare.

At least these are what I tell my customers.

Some AV/firewall packages (e.g., eTrust) use filter drivers similarly and
cause similar probs when uninstalled.
