why does outlook have to be the "default" e-mail program to print and
envelope from Word in Office 2003

AFAIK, it doesn't. But you do need access to the Outlook address book if you
want to insert addresses from it.

It pops up a box that tells me I HAVE to make outlook my default to use that
feature. I have used that feature for years up until yesterday when I thought
I would try 2003 (was using 2000) basically, if I do not open outlook it will
not let me use the address from my address book, I can see them and click on
them but they will not work.

Here is exactly what I get:

"Either there is no default mail client (there is - I use Eudora) or the
current client cannot fulfill the messaging request. Please run Microsoft
Office Outlook and set it as the default mail client"

I do not want to have to do this. Looks like I stick with 2000 as it workd
flawlessly and insert addresses from outlook into the box.

Hmm. I'm getting the same message. I used to be able to use Insert | Address
but no longer can. <sigh>
