Why is the directory services called active

Hello all,
This is a question that have been in my mind for quite long .i have taken the help of lot of people and no body could explain this in a convincing way ,My question is why is the directory services of win 2k and later called active ? please give me some valuable tips .thanks in advance .

Well. It was Novell's idea. Novell 4 introduce Active Directory, something
like the AD + DFS you see in MS windows today. It was a new idea and a good
one. Novell got the praise.

So Microsoft copied the idea.

If you want to know why active directory is "active", search a novell site.
 
I assume that it's just a nice, catchy name -like Windows itself.

Novel used Novel Directory Services; Microsoft could hardly call their
Directory Services Microsoft Directory Services, so their marketing guys
undoubtedly came up with the name active.
