why is sharing the root of a drive so bad?

I have set up a network for my home office, and all works fine.

I would like to share files by just giving access to the data I keep on a
"W:" drive (where "W" stands for "Work"), so that I can access any files on
that drive from any PC on my network. Every time I try to do this, I get a
warning asking me if I really want to do this, and do I understand the
risks of sharing the root of a drive.

In the context of a home office (though obviously I do take the laptop out
with me), is this something I ought to be worried about, or could I just go
ahead and do it? It would be neater than having all the directories as
shared.

thanks
Boris

There is nothing wrong with sharing the root drive. In fact if you
have XP pro you have a default root drive share of "C$". It's just
another annoying Microsoft prompt.

People might say that you could get viruses or some hacker might hack
into your root drive... Wah wah... you could get hit by a bus too and
the chances of being hit by a bus are far higher...

it all hinges on IF you get infected by a trojan , the hacker MAY have
access to your complete drive.

"they" recommend only sharing subfolders as required.

I have three computers at home sharing root drives ...(behind a firewall ,
which I recommend highly)

thanks Guys, it seems it is only a problem if I don't have a firewall and
if I get infected. (But I use good protection).

It is an annoying prompt: in reality I share all the folders on W:\, so I
can't see that it makes any difference if anyone gets access to root, as
they could equally get access to the shared subfolders.

thanks again,
Richard
