Why is Outlook 2003 so slow to start up?

I'm running Outlook 2002 on Windows XP and I'm having the same problem.
Outlook takes a lot of time to start up. After startup Outlook runs normally.
On similar computers it takes about 2 seconds to startup, in my case it takes
about 20 seconds or more. All other applications start up normally. The
computer does not freeze while Outlook is starting.

Slow is anything 20 seconds or slower. In my case, it takes about 10 minutes.
I finally removed Outlook 2003 altogether and went to Outlook Express. It
takes about 2 seconds. 'Define slow' is a stupid response from Microsoft.
Basically it shows that they want to waste our time with stupid questions
like this!

Perhaps I'd agree with you if that response had come from Microsoft, but it
didn't. Robert doesn't work for Microsoft.

As for the response itself, "slow" to some could mean "10 seconds" and to
others "ten minutes". Since you gave no indication as to the length of the
delay you experience, it wasn't an unreasonable response at all.

Next time, be specific in your question if you want a specific answer.

When I start up my desktop, it consistently takes sometimes up to 3-5 minutes
for Outlook XP to start. It just hangs and nothing else can be done on my
desktop. Other times, Outlook does not start at all and I have to restart
Outlook 2-3 times before it opens up. I have 512mb ram and have downloaded
all of the Window service pack updates. I also tried changing the file
C:\Documents and Settings\Craig\Application
Data\Microsoft\Outlook\outcmd.dat but that did not help.
Thanks.

You might try to reduce he size of your PST file. Disabling some com add-ins
(if you have them) might also help.

Have you tried disabling IM integration at the bottom of
Tools>Options>Other?

Bill & Brian:

The MSN IM integration was already disabled, my PST file is just over
1,000,000 KB and the only add-ins aer Mcafee anti virus yet I still have a
problem. THanks gor your help in advance.

1,000,000 KB is about one GB. I'm not surprised OL 2002 may be slowing
down. Try creating a new PST and moving some of the information in the old
PST to the new PST and then compact the old PST top reduce its size.

I have a similar problem. Some days Outlook works at a very fast speed, and
other days it is very slow (1 to 2 minutes to execute a command). I have
been told my archive file (382 MB) could be the reason. If you think it is,
could you provide specific directions about setting up a second archive.pst
file and being able to access both.

Thanks, JT

382 MB is not large enough, in my experience, to cause a slowdown like that.
