why is italicized text not showing on screen?

When I am typing and switch to italicized text (either using mouse/icon or
keyboard strokes) the italics no longer show up on the document on the
screen, although they print up later.

Make sure you're in the Print Layout view (View menu). Now can you see the
italics? If yes, which view were you in, before? And which version of Word do
you have?
