Why does Microsoft NOT allow users to default back to the original bar? I've
had Office 2007 since it came out, and for the life of me the thing is
completely terrible. I can't even begin to list the complaints (e.g., a
straight forward option to NOT number page 1)...

Indeed, don't I have the ability to customize this product as I see fit,
especially after I purchased it? Granted Office '07 has many more features,
but I'm sure 99% of Windows users don't need so many options. They're
overwhelming as well as intimidating--

Out of the box, the default is _not_ to number page 1. You seem to
have changed your normal.dotx template at some point.

Where are you seeing this default, Peter? In general, if you insert page
numbers (independently or as part of a header/footer building block), they
appear on all pages. If you add a cover page, the "Different first page"
option is enabled, and the cover page uses elements in and anchored to the
First Page Header/Footer.

The default is to have no page numbers -- you're quite right to say
"if you insert page numbers."

You see Miguel as asking how to turn on Different First Page, I see
him asking how to not have any page numbers at all. Maybe he'll come
back!

Since he mentioned page 1 specifically, and since previous versions do have
a way to omit the number just on page 1, I'm pretty sure that's what he was
asking.
