Why is formula not recognizing change in cell?

Several cells in my excell program are not responding to new data entry.
I've checked the formula and it remains the same as it has for years. The
cells above and below it having the same formula are working fine. I've
tried using manual calcuation, deleting and retyping the entry, moving the
information to a different place and then back, saving, closing and then
opening the file. I don't know what else to do. I also don't know how many
cells are affected. I've found 3-4 cells with the same problem by
painstakingly testing each cell in the area. I can no longer count on excell
recalculating newly entered numbers! Help!

One thing for which to check:

If some formulae update properly and others do not, the problem may be with
the data to whcih the cells refer. For example =SUM(A1:A100) will ignore
changes to A2 if A2 has been formatted as text.
