Why is file deletion so slow?

Deleting files from my hard drive can take an hour for 4
or 5 files. The hard drive is working feverishly, and
everything else on the PC crawls, while XP deletes the
simplest files. Any ideas?

Thanks - I appreciate your help.

The following link blames the recycle bin. I'd look at defragging the hard
drive as the most likely cause. If that doesn't fix the problem then I'd
assume the hard drive was on its last legs, a virus, or a anti virus install
that has been corrupted.
