Why does XP_SP2 send & receive so much data
when I first go onto the net?
- Sending up to almost 100k at times.
- Receiving up to almost 70k at times.

I have no virii or spyware on my system.

Auto updates are set to 'ask first'.

SP1 sent & received only a tiny fraction
of the amount that SP2 does.

Why so much data?

My system doesn't do that, so I have no idea; why don't you investigate a
bit.

type NETSTAT at a cmd prompt, see what connections are open. are they
connections to an MS site, or someplace else? maybe it's not XP at all,
but a 3rd party app on your machine (for example, Norton likes to check
its certificates often).

look at your firewall and see if it indicates which app is doing the
"talking" (ZA blinks the app icon when an app is active).

let us know what ya find...

It was microsoft.
I've completely turned-off auto-updates to stop it.
Fixed.

Regards.
