Why does Win 2000 REQUIRE a default printer?

I have several printer drivers properly installed; I use more than one
printer depending on the work required. It would be easier if all drivers
are installed and I am forced to choose which printer I need everytime I want
to print rather than Windows picking one for me (usually the one I don't
need.) Is there a work-around for this problem?

Merge the following NONE.REG file.

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows]
"Device"="NONE"

Log off and log on.

I believe you do have that functionality. If you click the shortcut to the Printer usually an icon on the toolbar
for the Application you are using it will use the default printer. If you use the menus File | Print... you'll have
the option of changing the printer you want to use.

Some applications have the shortcut and do not have the ability of File | Print... in that case you're stuck.

Hit CTRL-P or choose print from the file menu instead of clicking on the
printer icon and you will be prompted to choose a printer.
