Why does spell checker not work on imported doc?

I have a dcoument prepared by someone else and when I make my edits, the
spell checker/grammar checker will not work, even though it is turned on. I
have made typos on purpose, and it still does not read them. HELP
 
Hi Teresa,

It may be that the document's language setting have been set to 'no proofing'. Check under Tools|Language|Set
Language. Make sure the correct proofing language is selected and uncheck "Do not check spelling or grammar".
