My Windows XP has only 7 GB used and 30 GB empty, according to Properties. Why, then, does it keep telling me my virtual memory is too low

You don't have 30gb of virtual memory, you have 30gb of hard drive space.

Virtual memory is the page files on your hard disk that the computer uses like memory when actual memory is too full. You need to look in help for page files and follow the instructions for expanding the page files. I think one of the options is to let the system figure out the correct size which is what I would recommend. Hope this helps.

In addition to the comments by Cari, although overall you may have plenty of free space if the hard drive is partitioned then you need to have a minimum of free space in the partition where the paging file is located.

If none of the above apply and the error message contains the specific words "low on virtual memory" then tell us what exactly you are doing when the error message appears. There are a number of other less common causes.
If the error message contains "low memory" or other similar words post the full text of the message and what you are doing when the error occurs.
