Can anyone tell me what is difference between the transfer rate of a
HTTP download using internet explorer vs FTP download ? Also why is it
that when I run a speed test from some sites I get 1.8Mb/s but when I
download something I get 345KB/s ? Is that my browser is running slower
then usual ?

thanks all feedback welcome

This was answered in another newsgroup.

If you must post identical messages in more than one newsgroup please
crosspost, i.e. please place all of the newsgroups in the Newsgroup field of
one message, separated by commas. That way when someone reads the message
in one newsgroup it will be marked as read in all of them. In addition, an
answer posted in one newsgroup will generally show up in all of them.

This is usually not necessary since most of those who answer posts read
more than one newsgroup.

Actual download speed depends on the file server you are downloading
from. If it's busy, or has limitations, then the download speed is lower
than the test, or optimum.

Many thanks for the reply. I understand much more clearly the
differences thanks to you all. Sorry about the extra post I should have
crossed post but it only ocurred to me afterwards.

To add. There is lots competition in the web hosting business. Firm XYZ
may advertise a $4.99/month price, but pack too many sites onto a single
server. A cpu can only do so much. If too many calls are made at the
same time to files to download, and there are too many websites on the
server, then the download will be slow.

Faster, actually. 345KB/s is actually just over 2.5Mb/s.
