When turning my computer on, all the messages in my inbox have disappeared, I
can only retreive them by going in to 'find' Why is this and what can I do to
keep them on there until I move them. This has only just started to happen, I
have never had this happen before.

G'day Simone

There are two common reasons:

1. you are in the view called Unread Messages
2. your views are corrupt

1 - check your view and make sure it's showing "Messages"
2 - use the command line switch to rest your views (beware as you will lose
any customsied views)

Look through the how to guide here for /cleanviews
