In Excel 97 or Excel 2000 when I try to type the letters "HGE" into any CELL, it automatically discardes the "G" and displays only "HE"

Why and how do I get around this.

Hi
Did not change for me. Have a look at 'Tools - autocorrection' and
check that there's no entry for HGE

Go to Tools > AutoCorrect and delete the entry that
substitutes "HGE" with "HG".

Better yet, turn AutoCorrect OFF entirely. It may be of
limited utility in Word, but is a complete annoyance in
Excel.

Depending upon version, Menu: Tools, Options, Spelling
(tab), AutoCorrectOptions (button), clear ALL check boxes.
Then go to AutoFormat As You Type and turn it off too.
